Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Verizon: battery life a dampener

Amid applause Samsung Galaxy Nexus has finally been released on Verizon for $300. But many say that laptop battery life is a dampener
It was being awaited for weeks and the launch hasn’t disappointed either Google or Korean technology giant Samsung. The first smart phone that comes preloaded with Ice Cream Sandwich or Android 4.0 has been received with rousing welcome.
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is being hailed as a great vehicle for introducing Android Ice Cream Sandwich to the world and hence the best Android phone one can buy.
The U.S. version of the smartphone comes for $300 with a two-year contract and no one seems to be complaining.
Galaxy Nexus scores high on almost every attribute. Featuring that ultra-sleek bearing with a thinness of 0.35-inch and a weight of 4.8 ounces, the contraption comes power packed with TI OMAP 4460 dual core Cortex A9 processor and 1GB RAM. On the frontier of display too, the phone is integrated with 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD Screen (with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels). But the most innovative feature is of course the Ice Cream Sandwich OS, with its stylish home screen, revamped notifications and a plethora of visual improvements.
It is embellished with a Super AMOLED HD, with a 1280 x 720-pixel resolution breathtakingly packed in at 316ppi. This results in ultra-sharp and crisp images and bright, vivid and clear text sans any visible aberrations. On this screen reading and Web browsing is a joy.
This is even better display than Samsung’s Galaxy S II! This one even has a perfect wide viewing angle. On the large screen, 1080p HD video recording and viewing is great experience. If the photos don’t come out perfect, Ice Cream Sandwich offers its suite of irresistible photo-editing tools. You get an array of filters. At the bottom of this screen comes a touch sensitive panel with home and back button and a multitasking button that shows all your currently running apps as thumbnails – this is two of the standard four Android controls.
The new version looks like its ancestor, but is easier to use and more fluid and intuitive. The phone has flamed such reviews that some are even claiming it to be the one for which iPhone 4S can be ditched!
Another feature that surprised many was the fast camera shutter. The shutter lag here is almost zero and images are captured as soon as you press the on-screen shutter key.
The phone offers very strong 4G LTE coverage in San Francisco. Using the FCC-approved Ookla Speedtest app, the Galaxy Nexus achieved download speeds ranging from 6.69 to 12.11 megabits per second and upload speeds of 21.18 mbps. In short: it is blazing fast!
Call quality over Verizon’s network in San Francisco is pretty good everywhere in the city. The incoming call voice sounds natural, though when a call is made, the receivers at times say that the voice sounds rather “hollow”.
However, the external speaker volume is a dampener. The ringtone volumes are so low that a call or message alerts are often missed when the phone is in the pocket. And it sounds more ominous as the lacuna seems to do something with the hardware, so an update might not fix it! Then the toshiba pa3285u-1brs battery cover is tough to put back when you take it out. The new gimmicky feature Face Unlock, is a pain as it seems more like a hit and miss affair. It gets affected by a lack of light, especially when used indoors.
But its toshiba portege R835-P70 battery life is a dampener to people who use their smart phone almost continuously. A report in MSNBC.com says, “…the Verizon Galaxy Nexus lasted only 3 hours and 40 minutes on our Laptop Battery Test. This test involves continuous web surfing over 4G with the screen brightness at 40 percent. GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Auto Sync are all turned off. When we ran our battery for Dell Inspiron N5010 test on the unlocked Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile’s network, the device saw 5 hours of runtime. That’s a difference of nearly 1.5 hours”.
