New Review: Asus U31JG-A1

How quickly times change. As little as a two months ago, Intel’s older Core i processors (as opposed to their Next Gen a.k.a. “Sandy Bridge” chips) were the best-in-class. The $849 Asus U31JG-A1 features one of the previous-generation processors, and had it come out a month ago, it would have been a completely different review. This thin-and-light laptop offers a hefty Nvidia GeForce GT 415M (1GB) graphics card that’ll handle most day-to-day, light gaming, and entertainment tasks. To sweeten the deal further, the Asus U31JG-A1 has switchable graphics. This means that the graphics card stops working when not needed, letting a lesser Integrated Intel HD graphics chip take over and boosting the dell inspiron 1545 battery life substantially (4 hours and 46 minutes on our rigorous TOSHIBA pa3399u-1bas battery rundown test).
Those on a tight budget and in need of a thin-in-light notebook should read our review of the Asus U31JG-A1...and then wait for the inevitable price drop.
Here are some highlights:
“The Asus U31JG-A1 features a Core i3 processor from Intel's previous generation of mobile CPUs. Its 2.53GHz Core i3-380M processor is not a member of the latest generation of Intel chips, popularly known as Sandy Bridge and introduced early in 2011. Still, it's an able chip, and it has two capable friends: 4GB of 1,333MHz DDR3 memory, as well as a dedicated Nvidia graphics processor (GPU). Actually, the U31JG-A1 sports both an integrated graphics chipset and the discrete GPU, with the aim of balancing Sony vgp-bps9 battery life and gaming performance. “
“Once the laptop is up and running, you’ll see that the 13.3-inch display features a 1,366x768 native resolution, which is standard for this screen size. Although the display features LED backlighting, it doesn't seem terribly bright. The LCD has a glossy coating, but it doesn't produce too much in the way of glare and reflections. The glossy black screen bezel is a more egregious offender in this regard; it catches light that distracts, and it's also a magnet for smudges and fingerprints.”

Recycling Dell Laptop Batteries

Recycling is one of the biggest and highly important advocacies of today. It is logical, simple and very easy to do. Numerous environmentalists all over the world are encouraging people to save the planet by not carelessly throwing their hp pavilion dv5-1038tx battery away, especially the rechargeable ones, and instead make new things (beautiful and even useful things!) out of them. Recyclable dell inspiron 1545 battery may be found in, among others, cordless power tools, cellular and cordless telephones, video camcorders, digital cameras and remote control toys and yes, in laptop computers as well!

If you own a Dell laptop or notebook computer, you ought to know that you can always recycle your unit’s batteries. Hence, if you think that your HP pavilion zv5200 battery have started to act up, don’t throw them right away just yet!

One thing you can do is to contact Dell directly and ask if they can replace your hp pavilion tx1000 battery for a new one either for free or for a nominal fee. Dell has what they call a “Battery Program” and you might be qualified to avail of a replacement.

Another thing you can do is to drop by a recycling plant or at a drop off center of an organization which aims to collect recyclable items such as your hp laptop batteries. Compared to the days of old when people had to contact their local sanitation department or go out of their way to go to a recycling center (which, more often than not, did not accommodate individual consumers), there are national organizations now that receive these items and ship them to a recycling or refurbishing facility. Drop off centers are usually the branches of popular supermarket chains, bookstores, computer retail and repair shops, schools and home furnishings stores. If you aren’t sure if there’s a drop off center near your area, search online for some of these national organizations (most of them have websites and toll free numbers) or ask your local government for help. Once the Dell inspiron 1545 ac adapter reach the said state-of-the-art refurbishing facility, reusable materials such as nickel, cadmium and iron are taken and used in the manufacture of stainless steel and even in the production of new Dell inspiron 1501 ac adapter.

You can do these two things in order to recycle your Dell laptop battery. Recycling them is not just a way to get rid of what you think are useless batteries. It is, more importantly, your answer to the clarion call of keeping the environment safe, clean and sound for the future generations.

Camera used to see the world through animal’s POV

One of the most interesting facts about marine biologist Greg Marshall’s Crittercam research is how naturally the animal “photographers” go about their business after Marshall attaches a camera to their bodies.

Marshall, an award-winning National Geographic filmmaker, was the featured speaker at the Noble Foundation’s Profiles and Perspectives season finale at the Ardmore Convention Center Tuesday.

Marshall is best known for creating the Crittercam, a small, lightweight camera system that is attached to animals to give scientists a look at the world from their perspective. This system allows researchers to study animal behavior without interference from a human observer.

“It shows an animal’s life from an animal’s point of view,” he said.

Marshall got the idea to create an undersea “video collar” after observing a sucker fish (remora) clinging to a shark in the ocean off the coast of Belize. As he watched the shark swim away, it occurred to him that if he could substitute a camera for the remora, he could see the shark’s behavior unfold without disturbing the animal or its habitat. Once perfected, his invention transformed wildlife filmmaking forever. A fellow filmmaker dubbed Marshall’s invention the Crittercam.

The scientists attach the camera systems to their subjects using a variety of means — suction cups, harnesses, fin clamps and safe adhesives. Crittercams are Sharp BT-H21 Battery  powered and also float.

While viewing the world from a shark or whale’s perspective can be visually enthralling for the casual viewer, Marshall and his fellow scientists use the cameras to better understand the animal world.

“This is science,” he said. “It shows us what they are doing when we are not disturbing their behavior.”

As the Crittercam system evolved over time, it became smaller, lighter and more complex.

Today’s system allows scientists to record images and sound and collect environmental data such as depth and temperature.

The system has been deployed on more than 50 species, including sharks, seals, penguins, turtles and whales. As part of an early 2003 National Geographic collaboration with biologist Laurence Frank, the Crittercam roamed the African night on the back of a hunting lion. Later that same year, it accompanied a grizzly bear into the thick of Alaska’s temperate rain forest on a project with biologist LaVern Beier.

Images and data from the camera systems give researchers insight into how animals feed, communicate, mate, move and interact. What they learn from the Crittercams helps them protect the very animals that wear them.

Offbeat electronic toys for picky kids

Stuck for ideas about what to buy the kids in your life for the holidays? Here are some quirky, offbeat pieces of technology that could generate the excitement you’re hoping for.
At some point in their lives — right up until their 80s, in some cases — every kid wants to be a rock star. Now you can satisfy that desire and clothe them too with a Kids Electronic Guitar Shirt from camera battery. This is not just a T-shirt with a guitar printed on it: It is a musical instrument that is capable of playing all major chords. You just select the chords you want by pressing on the appropriate section of the guitar’s neck (instructions included). The audio has been sampled from an actual electric guitar, so the sound is authentic and you can use the included pick to strum!
The Kids Electronic Guitar Shirt comes with a wearable waist amplifier with working tone and volume controls — and yes, a la Spinal Tap, the volume control does go up to 11. Thinkgeek.com also sells an Electronic Drum Kit shirt.
If your child loves dolls and wants to be a TV producer, then you might want to buy her a doll with a video camera/recorder built into its chest! As quirky as this may sound, Mattel has created such a device. Video Girl Barbie has a TV lens built into her necklace, an digital recorder inside, and an LCD screen on her back with buttons to record the world as seen from Barbie’s perspective. The video can then be downloaded to a computer, edited and then emailed, shared or even posted on YouTube. Details, plus free Windows-compatible video editing software, can be found online at http://www.buy-laptop-battery.org/ .
Kids enjoying pretending to be spies, so why not equip them with the right gear for fun today and a possible career option when they grow up? Wild Planet makes all kinds of functioning spy gear. For instance, you can purchase a working Lie Detector Kit at http://www.canada-battery.org/ . You just put your suspect’s fingers on the sensors, ask them questions and watch the indicators light up when they lie. (This could be a useful gift for parents and spouses too.) The Ultimate Mission Spycase comes with a Spy Night Scope (red-tinted binoculars with a pop-up spotlight for night viewing up to eight metres away); a CSI-style Evidence Kit with 30X microscope, UV light, fingerprint kit and glow-in-the-dark powder; and an eight-in-one Spy Watch with stopwatch, flashlight, world time clock, wake-up alarm, locking armour, motion alarm with timer, two safe-drop message capsules and special spy paper.
Speaking of espionage, one of the great unanswered questions is, “What is my cat or dog doing when I’m at school?” To answer this, http://www.camera-battery.co.uk/ offers the Pet’s Eye View Digital Camera. This is a small digital camera that hangs down from your pet’s collar like a tag. You can set it to shoot up to 40 VGA resolution images (640 x 480 pixels) at time intervals of one, five or 15 minutes. When you get home, just plug the camera into your PC/Mac with the included USB cable. Voila! You will see what Fluffy and Fido have been up to — and which neighbours might be coming after your parents with lawsuits.
Kids love to scare adults, although this is not a skill they fully master until they become teenagers. Until that time arrives, kids need ’scaring aids’ such as remote-control tarantulas to bolster their terror tactics. You can now equip your children with realistic looking, radio-controlled tarantulas guaranteed to raise the blood pressure of anyone they encounter. Since these toys are sold by none other than the National Geographic Society at shop.nationalgeographic.com, you can defend your gift choices as ’educational’.
In keeping with our theme of quirky and offbeat presents, we have one last item to suggest: A USB-powered desktop refrigerator. Available from http://www.cheap-digital-camera-batteries.co.uk/, this retro-styled red and white fridge has just enough space for a single can of pop, ice tea or juice, and enough oomph from its USB-powered cooling fan to keep the drink slightly chilled. Dad might want this one for himself.

Reviving your laptop's battery

Battery life is one of the most influential things regarding your mobility, but laptops with a longer battery life usually cost accordingly. What to do if you don’t have the money?
What makes a laptop mobile? The weight and volume that allow carrying it from one place to other of course, but most importantly – the fact that it doesn’t need a constant electrical supply and is not tied to the electricity network, but comes with its own sony vaio pcg-505 dc adapter . This is exactly the reason why battery time, or “battery life” are such an important factor influencing the true mobility you’re receiving.
Some laptops come with a guarantee (that they not sure they can uphold) for a significantly longer battery life, but most laptops these days offer a typical life of two to five hours. How long you’ll actually receive? That’s up to you.
What affects the battery time?
The laptop’s ibm thinkpad a30 laptop battery time is affected by a variety of factors, mostly having to do with the work load placed on the various components.
The most electricity consuming component in the computer is usually the screen. The bigger it is and the more its rear lighting is stronger, the more his electricity consumption increases and the battery life shortens. Other electricity consumers are the processor (CPU) and the graphic inserter (GPU), that when required to work, consume more electricity. These are usually followed by the hard drive and wireless communication.
The differences between the various laptops in terms of their TOSHIBA pa3285u-1brs battery time, mostly relate to these factors. For example computers that specifically designed to provide a longer battery life usually utilize LED screen which are economical and a poorer processor (LV/ULV) which is a little slower but its electricity consumption is significantly lower.
Integrated graphic accelerators consume less electricity that accelerators installed on a separate card (Descrete), when the latter offer better performance. The new Intel mobile platforms (Centrino 2) and AMD offer a combination between the two methods with the option to switch between them during the use according to priority – more performance or more dell inspiron 1525 battery time.
It’s important to know about batteries
The first thing you should do to ensure you receive as long as possible battery time, is to choose your computer wisely. All manufacturers publish data regarding the battery time on their websites, in the technical specification of each computer. This data should be taken with a limited guarantee and cross reference with independent data received from field tests technology journalists hold and are plentiful online.
Note that a large part of laptops can be purchased with a “regular” batter or a “strong” battery that can often provide almost double the work time, at a cost of a few extra dollars and a few more grams. If dell inspiron 1545 battery time is important to you, you’re better off purchasing the computer with the stronger batter. It is acceptable to distinguish between batteries according to the Cell number it includes; most computers can be acquired with 6 cells and 9 cell and some cases there are also 4, 8 and 12 cells. The method of calculation changes from one computer to the other, so there’s no point doing the arithmetic.
And by the way, if your mobile is a year or two years old or more and you feel the battery time is shortening – it is more than likely you’re right. The charging power of the FUJITSU fpcbp83 battery decreases as time goes by and the number of charges increases.
Using work settings
Most laptops from recent years, support various technologies to reduce the electricity consumption of various components, so the computer knows to adapt the action of the various components operation with requirements (for example, reducing the speed of the processors clock while writing a document in the word processor when its not fully necessary). Windows systems allow operating these technologies automatically and most manufacturers provide along with the computer a dedicated software tool to mange power.
Usually, all you need to do is look for the hp pavilion tx1000 battery icon in the corner of the screen, click and choose Power saver mode (If you don’t have such an icon, look inside the control panel, Power Options – Advanced and change the appropriate settings). If you’re not “stressed” you can choose the “Balanced” mode in which the OS balanced between the need for performance and TOSHIBA satellite u405-s2854 battery life. When you’re connected to the electricity network you can choose the “High Performance” mode.
Proper use of the screen
To reduce power consumption of the screen it is recommended that you first switch it to the lowest clarity level and then gradually increase it and let your eyes adjust. Stop at the lowest clarity level you can handle without straining your eyes.
Note that the optimal clarity level is also affected by environmental conditions. For example, if you’re at a well lit location it is recommended to look for shadow. The viewing angle of the screen is also very significant – if you adjust it at a slightly sharper angle you’ll need a higher clarity setting.
Turning off and disconnecting plugins
If you find yourself on a flight or a long drive without an internet connection you won’t be able to surf so there’s no reason for you not to switch off the communication plug ins of the computer. Most new computers have a special switch that allows turning off their WiFi option and others have an appropriate keys combination (usually FN+F2 OR FN+F5, search documentation).
In the same way, it is recommended in case needed (meaning when you see the vaio pcg-505 series battery is running low), to disconnect any plug in that receives power through the USB interface, such as a Disk on Key, External driver or optical mouse. The optical driver should only be used when necessary.
Appropriate use of software
Some applications deplete the dell inspiron 1545 ac adapter battery quickly: viewing a movie in full screen mode, running a game, an application that requires intensive action by the disk such as virus scanning or defragmentation. Delay what you can, make sure you close every unnecessary software and when you finish using a certain program shut it down before moving on to the next.  If you’re right at the end of the batter and are not connected to the net you can also turn off your antivirus program.
What you can’t shut down or don’t want to give up, can be “minimized”. Viewing video on part of the screen instead of a full screen consumes less power. Power consumption while playing music is a function of volume control – so turn it down.
If you’re using software that performs background scans of the computer, such as Google Desktop Search or Copernic, turn it off because they work the hard disk overtime. It is also recommended to turn off Windows Index service that does the same. To do that, type in services.msc in the command line and press Enter to enter Windows services list. Search for Indexing Service (XP) or Windows Search (Vista) right click and choose stop.
If you’re not using Windows built in search tools, it is recommended to make the following change:  begin as previously explained and when you reach the appropriate service right click it choose Properties and change the setting from Automatic to Manual and confirm. This change will also enhance performance and save hp pavilion dv1000 series battery time.
A few other things that could help
Defragment the disk often. Of course while it is plugged in. the defragmentation will accelerate the hard drive and improve performance as well as reduce the range of the disks operation and thus prolonging battery life.
Install an additional memory. The appropriate memory volume (1GB or more for XP and at least 2GBfor Vista) reduce use of virtual memory and thus minimize use of the hard drive and prolong Compaq presario 2500 battery life.
Clean the battery connections. Every few months remove the battery and clean its metal contacts with an alcohol soaked cloth.
Don’t count on the StandBy mode. It uses less power but will still deplete the dell vostro 1400 battery slowly. Execute a proper shut down.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V

We take a brief look at Sony's feature-rich contender in the crowded, long-zoom compact category.
The long-zoom compact category has been slowly gaining in popularity, with many manufacturers beefing up their point-and-shoot offerings by adding 10x to 16x optical zoom lenses, throwing in some advanced user features and keeping all that in one neat package. Just last month, Sony unveiled a new contender in the already crowded long-zoom compact segment, competing with the likes of camera battery and camcorder battery or battery charger. These handy compacts are not only versatile with extended zoom optics, but are also equipped with advanced features that will appeal to those who want more creative options on their cameras.

Upside

The HX9V packs a long list of features, including a 16-megapixel Exmor R sensor, 3D capture modes and In-Camera Guide, to name a few.

The Exmor R sensor features Sony's backside-illuminated CMOS technology. This minimizes noise in pictures at high ISO and provides enhanced picture quality.

The snapper also comes with three 3D capture modes that utilizes Sony's dual-lens system and allows users to create sweeping panoramas. These 3D images can then be viewed in its full glory on compatible 3D TVs. The camera's 16x optical zoom and 24mm wide angle lens would enable users to shoot wide landscape scenery as well as closeups of flora and fauna.

It's helpful that Sony included an In-Camera Guide which provides onscreen tips and usage information. This would benefit first-time users, particularly those buying the camera for overseas travel--you definitely don't want to lug that manual across continents just know how to access a certain function.

An interesting feature to note is that this Cyber-shot also sports an in-built digital compass which may come in handy if you ever find yourself lost in the wilderness.

Downside

Although Sony has included manual controls to adjust your aperture and shutter speeds, we think that the lack of aperture and shutter priority modes may annoy advanced users.

Furthermore, users have to export the images to their computers to fully take advantage of the shooter's in-camera geo-tagging capabilities. Sure, this Cyber-shot records GPS coordinates to images. However, compared to other GPS-enabled cameras like the Samsung WB650 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20, the HX9V falls short as it does not integrate its GPS with any mapping service for users who want to track their location.

Outlook

The Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V caters not only to beginners with its helpful In-Camera Guide, but may appeal to serious hobbyists with its manual controls, 3D capture and panoramic modes.

Available in black, the HX9V retails at about US$350. Pricing and availability of the camera in Asia is still not firm, but we will update this story when we have more information from the manufacturer.

Review - Canon PowerShot SX30 IS

John Kennedy gets to play with the new Canon PowerShot SX30 IS, a DSLR-styled camera with an astonishing 35x zoom lens capable of shooting high quality HD movies and professional stills.
My history with cameras has always been patchy. My very first SLR camera, an East German Practika that I bought when I was 18 with the proceeds of my pay from a week away with the good old FCA had a collapsing mirror within it, causing endless frustration. Then I kept losing lens caps and even as I fumbled my way through darkrooms and figuring out the various chemical mixes, exposure times, etc, the smell of sulphur was always there and I have come to view the world of photography with a certain reference. Mainly because I sucked at it.
When digital cameras arrived I thought I was saved and invested the proceeds of a minor Lotto win in a tiny 8-megapixel Samsung digital camera which I still use occasionally. As the years have gone by and SLRs are now digital, they are still nonetheless a little complicated in my opinion and I have to laugh at seeing novices like myself carting around big expensive digital SLRs with massive lenses that they keep on ‘Auto’. I think it’s the equivalent of owning a massive 4x4 Range Rover and living in the suburbs with nothing more arduous to climb than the occasional speed bump.
I occasionally borrow digital SLRs to bring to events like CES and Mobile World Congress to shoot video footage and try and get authentic shots of products I get to look at and people I am fortunate enough to talk to. In the past, Sony DSLRs and the office Canon DSLR have served me well. Although I did lose the lens cap for the Canon on my last jaunt.

35x zoom lens

So it was with a high degree of expectation that I jumped at the chance to review the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS. Why? Well, it’s a DSLR-styled camera that is what it is. It’s not pretending to be a full SLR but if you want it has astonishing horsepower – it boasts a remarkable 35x zoom lens.
You see, it looks the part, it can perform against the best of digital cameras and is astonishingly versatile and easy to use. It’s 35x image stabilised optical zoom provides a 35mm equivalent to a focal range of 24mm to 840mm.
My initial first impressions and the wow factor for me was how compact the camera was, yet it weighs only 600g - another key point if you are tired dragging heavy equipment around. Its hard and plastic body, however, still felt a little on the fragile side to me and I wonder just how much of a beating the camera can take.
A winner for me was not only its versatility and the great shots you can get from a 14.1-megapixel camera but the size of the 2.7-inch LCD screen at the rear which also has a handy tilt capability, which could be useful if you're at an event and shooting from an audience, for example.
But the camera’s real advantage and the factor that will set it apart from all the competition is its 35x zoom. Never have I beheld a device that is capable of zooming so far and yet be so compact and small. The beauty of the technology can be discovered in the image stabilisation feature that once you have zoomed as far as you want to it corrects itself and settles into a workable focus.
PowerShot SX30 IS
When you compare the PowerShot SX30 IS with the higher-end Canon devices, like the 550D for example, which to the uninitiated could be like trying to drive the Space Shuttle, the SX30 IS gets you right to the functions you want quickly and easily.
For example, you just want to record a HD movie. The record button is helpfully large and is located right beside the viewfinder. At the same time, seasoned Canon experts won’t be disappointed at this simplicity because many of the hallmark controls of any Canon device are also in the usual places.
It’s simply a well-designed product, compact, versatile, powerful but not complicated. Here’s to good engineering and product design. The camera comes with an elegant soft leather strap.
Another plus has to be the lithium-ion canon camera battery. I charged it for less than one hour and one week later I’m still using the camera intermittently without any significant loss of sony camera battery life. So no power leakage is apparent.
The PowerShot SX30 IS matches power with simplicity and is ideal for the user who wants to shoot quality HD stills and video with no fuss. The camera has an RRP of €549, including VAT.

Smart Electric Drive Passion Coupe first drive

The Smart ForTwo seems like an excellent platform for an electric car. Small and lightweight are all virtues for current battery technology, but the Smart just might be too small. Smart fitted the 2011 Electric Drive Passion Coupe with an electric motor and lithium ion hp pavilion dv1000 battery pack to test the proposition.
The resulting 63 mile-range in EPA testing and about 60 mph top speed falls short of larger competitors such as the Nissan Leaf. Even compared with a gasoline-powered Smart ForTwo, which can hit comfortable freeway speeds and achieve high fuel economy, the Smart Electric Drive has a hard time justifying itself.
Smart is currently leasing its Electric Drive coupes in a test program, but plans on selling these green electric cars starting in early 2012. The company loaned one to CNET for evaluation.
Build or refit?
When automakers decide to make an electric car, they have a choice of building something from the ground up, such as the Nissan Leaf, or adapting an existing platform, such as the Ford Focus Electric. Smart chose the latter course, putting a 41-horsepower motor and 16.5 kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery pack underneath the cargo area, where the gas engine would normally go.
Outside and inside, the Smart Electric Drive differs little from its gasoline-powered sibling. Even the plug-in port is in the same spot as the gas filler port. The instrument cluster is similar, with one big speedometer and an LCD panel. But two pod gauges on the Smart Electric Drive's dashboard indicate remaining battery charge and power draw on the dell vostro 1400 battery .
Smart Electric Drive
The Smart Electric Drive uses a standard J1772 charging plug.
(Credit: Josh Miller/CNET)
Missing, and an apparent oversight from Smart, is an indication of remaining range. Certainly the sony vaio pcg-505 battery charge gauge offers some clue, but there is nothing showing how many miles the car can travel. This data is crucial in a car with limited range and few places to recharge the battery. It is possible that Smart will add range information by the time it offers the car for sale.
Smart managed to keep the acer aspire 1410 battery pack small, so it does not impinge on the car's cargo space at all. The two seats offer the same format as in the gasoline version, with an upright position that is easy to access and offers good all-around visibility.
Turning the key causes the same sort of silent light show as in other electric cars and hybrids. But unlike most other cars, putting the shifter in Drive has no obvious effect--the Smart Electric Drive just sits there. There is no creep built into the drive programming, so you have to push the accelerator to make it move. That is the first note of non-typical drive performance in the Smart Electric Drive.
Similar to how the Tesla Roadster operates, taking your foot off the brake causes the Smart Electric Drive to slow rapidly as its regeneration system kicks in. Pushing the brake pedal causes additional regeneration, observable from how the power flow gauge dips further into the green. Like its gasoline-powered sibling, the Smart Electric Drive gets disc brakes up front and drums on the rear wheels.
Smooth acceleration
As the Smart Electric Drive only needs a single reduction gear, it doesn't suffer from the horrible transmission issues of the gasoline-powered Smart ForTwo. Typical for an electric car, acceleration is smooth and steady, taking 6.5 seconds to get to 37 mph, according to Smart.
Smart Electric Drive
The cargo area is not affected by the battery pack, as in some hybrids and electric cars.

The lithium ion battery pack weighs more than 300 pounds, but this doesn't represent a net gain for the car, as the Smart Electric Drive sheds its gas tank and engine. But the Smart Electric Drive is noticeably heavier than the gasoline version, which weighs in at 1,958 pounds. Although that weight negatively affects acceleration and range, it helps stability. Still no sports car, the Smart Electric Drive feels steadier than the standard Smart ForTwo.
The ride quality remains rough, with the little Smart suffering from its short wheelbase, small tires, and compact suspension gear. Pothole jolts come in quick succession, and the car transmits every uneven surface to the cabin.
In the city, the Smart Electric Drive works well, with the same easy parking as the gasoline version. Beyond the smooth acceleration and the car's EPA rating of 87 mpg equivalent, it offers little advantage over the gasoline-powered Smart. The Smart Electric Drive also seems to come standard with power steering, unlike its sibling, where power assist is an option.
Of course, being an electric car, owners will need a place to plug in the Smart Electric Drive, which can be tough to find in a city. Smart says the hp pavilion zt1135 ac adapter battery will charge in less than eight hours off of a 220-volt outlet, so expect substantially longer on a standard 110-volt source.

The Smart Electric Drive does not feel particularly suitable for the freeway. Acceleration to freeway speeds is slow, and although Smart says it has a top speed of 60 mph, hill climbing will reduce that. While driving up a gradual incline, the car barely made it past 50 mph. Expect to live in the slow lane if you dare freeway travel.
Cabin electronics are the same as in the standard Smart ForTwo, centered on an AM/FM head unit with no CD player. There is a USB port in the glovebox that reads MP3s off of thumbdrives. But it will not work with an iPod. The audio system consists of two speakers, essentially a large boombox.
Smart offers a number of options for the car, including a Bluetooth phone system and in-dash navigation. The best way to option up a Smart car, though, is to get the smartphone integration kit, along with Smart's car app compaq presario 2500 battery. This app includes most standard cabin tech features, including navigation.
The real nail in the Smart Electric Drive coffin will probably be its price. Although not on sale yet, the expected price is around $45k, well above the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi's upcoming i car. The Smart Electric Drive's easy parking is not enough to justify the price versus the lack of seats, range, and freeway usability.
